Diagnosis: differs from H. vonlinnei by a more prominent premaxillary pedicel, a relatively much deeper cheek and less strongly curved oral teeth; live colors on this species are unknown (Ref. 74923).
Found in sheltered gulfs and bays and relatively undisturbed offshore places, over hard and soft substrates (Ref. 4983). The gut content of the specimens which were examined consisted mainly of finely macerated fish remains, identifiable as cichlids (Ref. 558).
