This species is distinguished from its congeners, except T. anostomus, by the following characters: olfactory lamellae 11-17 (vs. 20-41); differs from T. anostomus, T. araguaiensis with gill rakers on lower limb 11-14 (vs. 17-20); differs from T. anostomus, T kuluene by having 2 distinct humeral marks (vs. 1); differs from T. ommatus by having maxillary teeth 1-4 (vs. 7-8) and by having a mark centered on the caudal peduncle (vs. mark on the posterior portion of the caudal peduncle); differs from T. rarus without dark stripes on the flank (vs. present); differs from T. georgiae, T. rarus by having 3.5 scale rows between lateral line and pelvic-fin origin (vs. 4.5-5.5); differs from T. argenteus by predorsal scales 7-9 (vs. 11-17); differs from T. denticulatus by having humeral marks separated by only one vertical scale row (vs. humeral marks separated by three vertical scale rows). differs from T. chalceus by dentary having thinner and sharper principal teeth (vs. more robust teeth) (Ref. 124043).
