Environment:  demersal; marine; depth range 209 - 319 m
Distribution:  Indo-Pacific: Red Sea, western Saudi Arabia, Western Australia (Ningaloo Reef and Montebello, Seychelles, Christmas Island, New Caledonia, Wallis and Futuna, Fiji, Tonga and Samoa.Islands.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 10-10; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11-11; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 8-8; Vertebrae: 24-24. This species is distinguished by the following characters: with an indistinct opercular spine which is fully covered by skin; black tip of upper lobe of caudal fin; steep and long snout, 10.8%-12.1% SL; eye small 7.8%-10.1% SL; cheek deep 5.2% SL; otolith relatively slender and complicated; caudal fin relatively long 29.2%-31.5% SL; deep fin concavity 18.9%-19.7% SL; strong genetic divergence at mitochondrial markers (cytb and COI); it has a much larger body size with fork length exceeding 115.0 cm FL (Ref. 123743).
Biology:  Reported catch from the East Bank, American Samoa in 2016, weighed 31 kg and total length >1 m (Ref. 123743).
