Etymology: Barilius: Latinization of 'barila', presumably a Bengali local name for Barilius barila, but it lacks a proper reference (J. Müller, pers. comm., April 2021, after information from native speakers)torsai: Named for its type locality, Torsa, a tributary of the Brahmaputra River System; an adjectve.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 7; Anal soft rays: 8. This species is distnguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: lateral line complete, 52-53 scales; pre-dorsal scales 29; pectoral fin notched; with two well-developed pairs of barbels (rostral and maxillary). Colouration: body with 9-11 blue vertcal bars; dorsal-fin hyaline with dark pigment concentrated along lower 2/3rd of its rays (Ref. 126954).
