Etymology: Chaetodon: Greek, chaite = hair + Greek, odous = teeth (Ref. 45335); declivis: Named comes from the latin 'declivis' (means 'sloping') and refers to the abrupt diagonal demarcation in the color pattern.

Issue
The subspecies Chaetodon declivis wilderi {Pyle, 1988) is considered as valid and might be upraised at species rank. More studies are needed.
