Differs from Channa lucius in possessing a round head (vs. pointed), numerous spots on unpaired fins (vs. bars and stripes), reddish-brown life coloration (vs. brownish black) (Ref. 56386).

Obligate air-breathing (Ref. 126274); Inhabits only in blackwater streams (Ref.56749). A common snakehead in peat swamps (Ref. 56749).
