Etymology: Erimystax: Greek, eri = aumentative prefix, a lot + Greek, mystax = moustache (Ref. 45335); insignis: From the words eri, an intensifying prefix; stigma, spot; and insignis, meaning remarkable (referring to the distinct pigment pattern) (Ref. 10294).

Inhabits rocky riffles and runs of clear small to medium rivers (Ref. 86798). Feeds on periphyton and aquatic insect larvae dominated by dipterans (midges and blackflies) and mayflies (Baetidae and Potamanthus) (Ref. 10294).
