Etymology: Lythrurus: Greek, lythron = blood + Greek, oura = tail; the red breeding colours in most members of this genus (Ref. 45335); ardens: ardens, meaning burning (Ref. 10294).

North America: Atlantic Slope from York River drainage (where introduced) in Virginia to Roanoke River drainage in North Carolina, USA; upper New River system (Kanawha-Ohio drainage) above Kanawha Falls in West Virginia and Virginia, USA.
