Épines dorsales (Total) : 13; Rayons mous dorsaux (Total) : 15 - 17; Épines anales: 2; Rayons mous anaux: 13 - 14. Most of the body and head is brown, grading to pale tan or off-white on ventral portion; slight suffusion of yellow on head and nape; dark brown streak near margin of each scale, appearing as series of narrow transverse bands. A prominent dark brown to blackish spot occupying four scales is below the 15-16th tubed lateral line scale. The fins, most of soft dorsal, caudal peduncle and posteriormost part of body yellow; pectorals transparent with suffusion of yellow and a small dark brown spot superiorly at pectoral fin base. The rim of the anal opening is dark brown.

Adults inhabit outer rocky and coral reefs (Ref. 7247). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205).
