Etymology: Ancistrus: Greek, agkistron = hook (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Colonel José Damasceno Nogueira acted as Steindachner’s host in Filomeno, Brazil (1903), near where the holotype was acquired. The original text does not help, but it is most likely that the catfish’s binomial honours the colonel. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
