Etymology: Amblyraja: Greek, amblys = darkness + Latin, raja, -ae = ray (Raja sp.) (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Thomas Frerichs was captain of the research vessel ‘Walther Herwig’ from which the holotype was collected. He was honoured for: “…his keen interest in deepsea catches, which assured us many precious discoveries”. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Issue
Possibly a junior synonym of A. hyperborea due to strong morphological similarity according to Ebert & Stehmann (2013, Ref. 98315) and Weigmann (2016, Ref. 118749) (Ref. 118749).

Biologia     Glossario (es. epibenthic)

Found on continental slope and upper abyssal plain. Feeds on small benthic invertebrates, adults possibly piscivorous (Ref. 114953). Oviparous (Ref. 50449). Males reaches maturity by ca. 76 cm TL; young hatch at ca. 22 cm TL (Ref. 114953). Produces horny-shelled eggs (Ref. 205).

Oviparous, paired eggs are laid. Embryos feed solely on yolk (Ref. 50449). Eggs have horn-like projections on the shell (Ref. 205).
