Spine dorsali (totale) : 0; Raggi dorsali molli (totale) : 12 - 13; Spine anali: 0; Raggi anali molli: 8. Body depth at least 1.1 times in head length; ventral fin length at least 1.7 times in head length; nuchal hump steeply rising at occiput; black, blackish red, dark brown or dark green.
Prefers rocky substrates in waters less than 6 m deep, especially in the shore areas, but it also occurs over muddy and sandy substrates. It has a mixed diet of mainly fish, insects and macrophytes (Ref. 35835).
