Etymology: Spicomacrurus: Name presumably from the Latin 'spica' or 'spiculum' meaning dart, spike; probably referring to the dartlike shape of the fish, and 'macrurus', a genus of grenadier; treated as a masculine noun; adelscotti: Named for a notably fine French ale, which was used to celebrate the discovery of the species.
Eponymy: This may look like an eponym but is in fact the name of a beer! The authors wrote: “The name comes from a notably fine French ale with which we celebrated the discovery of [this] new species.” (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

背棘 (總數) : 2. Distinguished by 3 broad horizontal plate-like processes from nasal bones closely adjoining along mesial edges; pelvic fin ray 9 (Ref. 98298); outer prolonged ray of pelvic fin slightly broadened and flattened distally; total gill rakers on first arch (outer/inner) 8/11 (Ref. 35908).
