Etymology: Characidium: Diminutive of Charax, -akos = a fish without identification (Ref. 45335); stigmosum: From the Latin stigmosus meaning full of marks, in reference to the vertically oriented black marks on the sides of the body (Ref. 46824).

Dorsale stekels (totaal) : 0; Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal) : 12 - 13; Anale stekels: 0; Anale zachte stralen: 8 - 9; Wervels: 32 - 33. Distinguished from all other Characidium species by the presence of black marks along the sides of the body, superimposed on the vertical bars, which occur in most species of the genus; most of the marks are vertically oriented elliptical, except anteriormost 1-2 marks, which may be roundish or horizontally elongated (Ref. 46824).
