Etymology: Pomacentrus: Greek, poma, -atos = cover, operculum + Greek, kentron = sting (Ref. 45335); callainus: Name from Latin word for blue-green, referring to its life colour.

Occurs in shallow reefs , close to corals for shelter (Ref. 54980). Life history characteristics for the family specify that this group is oviparous, with distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205).
