Etymology: Pygidianops: Greek, pyge = rump + Gree, ops = appearance (Ref. 45335); magoi: Named for the late Professor Francisco Mago-Leccia, in recognition of his participation in the discovery of this species and his innumerable contributions to northern South American ichthyology.

Diagnosed from all its congeners by the absence of pectoral and anal fins, posterior naris absent, four laterosensory pores on the head, and presence of 9-10 caudal fin rays. Differs from Pygidianops eigenmanni by the absence of eyes (Ref. 56682).
