Etymology: petymbuaba: The specific name petymbuaba, meaning smoking pipe; cachimbo in Portuguese, comes from the Tupi language and it is an allusion to the type locality of the species.

Raggi dorsali molli (totale) : 10 - 11; Vertebre: 34 - 37. Distinguished from all its congeners and all remaining characid fishes by the presence of a broad, well-defined dark longitudinal stripe and longitudinal series of dark blotches along the dorsal and lateral surfaces of body (more developed above the longitudinal dark stripe) (Ref. 56956).
