Etymology: Garra: Name based on a vernacular Indian name (Hamilton, 1822:343, Ref. 1813); a fish living in mud (Ref. 128817); geba: The species name geba is in reference to the river system in which the type series was collected (Ref. 58532).

Diagnosis: Garra geba is distinguished from African congeners by the following combination of features: intermediate disc development, depressed head and gracile body; between 5 and 9 predorsal scales anterior to dorsal fin; asquamate chest, belly, and postpelvic region; posterior chamber of gas bladder small; and intestine short (Ref. 58532).
