Etymology: Bodianus: Bodianus after Bodiano or Pudiano, from the Portuguese pudor, meaning modesty (Jordan & Evermann, 1896); neopercularis: Name from Latin 'ne' for not, and neuter noun 'operculum' for cover, to indicate that this species has the appearance of Bodianus opercularis, but is a separate species.
