Etymology: hiramatsui: Named after W. Hiramatsu, who collected the type specimens of this species (Ref. 75057).
Eponymy: Professor Cornelius Jan van der Horst (1889–1951) was a Dutch zoologist who moved to South Africa (1928) and became Head of the Zoology Department, Witwatersrand University, Johannesburg. [...] Wataru Hiramatsu was working at the Laboratory of Marine Biology, Kochi University when he collected the eponymous goby. Taggstrålar i ryggfenan (totalt) : 7; Mjukstrålar i ryggfenan (totalt) : 12; Taggstrålar i analfenan: 1; Mjukstrålar i analfenan: 11. This species differs by having the following characters: 12 segmented rays on second dorsal fin; 38-39 longitudinal scale count; 15-16 predorsal scales; 16-17 transverse scale count from origin of second dorsal fin backward and downward to anal-fin base; pectoral-fin base broadly covered by cycloid scales; well developed connecting membrane between innermost rays; trough along posterior margin of eye well developed; almost entirely blackened operculum; cheek and occipital region scattered with minute yellow spots (and no yellow lines) (Ref. 75057).
