Etymology: Ammoglanis: Greek, ammos = sand + Greek, glanis = a fish that can eat the bait without touching the hook; a cat fish. Glanis was the sacred spirit of springs in the town of Glanum and there was the Glanicae, a triad of local mother goddesses (Ref. 45335); amapaensis: Named for the Brazilian state of the type locality, Amapá.

This species is distinguished by having a slender and long quadrate with greatest depth about 30% of the length of its main axis; compared to its congeners, it has a long nostril barbel, reaching the posterior margin of the eyes (vs. reaching anterior margin), no cranial fontanel (vs. present), anterior part of palatine with small ossification (vs. none) (Ref. 78711).
