Etymology: Australoheros: From the Latin word 'australis' meaning southern, and the name Heros, after the nominotypic genus of the Heroini tribe. Tribe; taura: Named from the southern Brazilian idiomatic expression 'taura' (brave), in reference to its territorial and aggressive behavior and the adverse habitat in which it occurs.

Inhabits small, shallow rivers with clear water, moderate water current and usually with grass or other vegetation at the margins (Ref. 81913). River bottom is composed of rocks and loose stones, and sand, with few macrophytes (Ref. 81913).
