Etymology: Chromis: Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); unipa: Named for the acronym of Universitas Negeri Papua (State University of Papua,Manokwari).

Dorsale stekels (totaal) : 14; Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal) : 11; Anale stekels: 2; Anale zachte stralen: 11; Wervels: 26. This species is distinguished by the following characters: D XIV,11; A II,11; pectoral rays 18; spiniform caudal rays 3; tubed lateral-line scales 14-17; gill rakers 7-8 + 19-20 = 27-28; depth of body 2.0-2.2 in SL; sides of body with alternating blue grey and brassy yellow stripes; abdomen and lower part of head blue grey; fins are bluish except the base of caudal fin which is brown; apex of anal fin with a prominent black spot (Ref. 82433).

Collected from the type locality with rubble and low-profile coral reef substratum at the base of a steep, nearly vertical drop-off, 42 to at least 65 m depth (Ref. 82433). Life history characteristics for the family specify that this group is oviparous, with distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205).
