Etymology: Eviota: No etymology given, suggested by Christopher Scharpt: from Latin 'eu' for 'true' and 'iota' for anything very small, in combination 'truly very small' referring to it as being the smallest vertebrate at the time it has benn described by Jenkins (thus, making the suggestion by Scharpt plausible; lateritea: Named for the mineral laterite, producing the red dust that is all-pevasive in southern New Caledonia, referring to the red coloration of the species; noun in apposition.

This species is distinguished by the following characters: usually without any cephalic pores, but always lacking the POP, IT, AOT, NA pores, and the PITO, AITO, and/or SOT pores may be present; dorsal/anal fin-ray formula of 9/8, some pectoral-fin rays are branched, the fifth pelvic-fin ray long, 50-74% of fourth pelvic-fin ray; without a dark spot at preural centrum nor an occipital spot; the first dorsal fin is not dark (Ref. 109221).
Collected from fringing reefs, with silty coral rock and rubble bottom (Ref. 109221).
