Etymology: Cirrhilabrus: Latin, cirrus = curl fringe + Greek, labros = furious (Ref. 45335)cyanogularis: Name from Greek combination 'kyanos' for blue and Latin 'gularis' for throated; referring to the extensive blue throat coloration of males of the species (gender = masculine).

Épines dorsales (Total) : 11; Rayons mous dorsaux (Total) : 9; Épines anales: 3; Rayons mous anaux: 9; Vertèbres: 25. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: one row of cheek scales; predorsal scales 6; dorsal-fin spines are taller than segmented rays; no filament on middle of dorsal fin; pelvic fins long and reaching past anal-fin origin; in life males with broad blue area covering isthmus, lower part of head and breast to at least pelvic origin, and soft dorsal fin with narrow black, medial stripe (Ref. 118207).
