Etymology: Eviota: No etymology given, suggested by Christopher Scharpt: from Latin 'eu' for 'true' and 'iota' for anything very small, in combination 'truly very small' referring to it as being the smallest vertebrate at the time it has benn described by Jenkins (thus, making the suggestion by Scharpt plausiblelentiginosa: Name from Latin adjective 'lentiginosus' meaning full of freckles, referring to the many tiny dark spots covering the yellow head and body: treated as a feminine nominative singular adjective.

Espinhos dorsais (total) : 7; Raios dorsais moles (total) : 8; Espinhos anais: 1; Raios anais moles: 8. This species is distinguished by the following characters: cephalic sensory-canal pore system lacking only the IT pore (Pattern 2); dorsal/anal fin-ray formula 8/8; pectoral-fin rays 16 or 17, all apparently unbranched (but broken ends); no fifth pelvic-fin ray; male urogenital papilla a flat rounded plate; lower half of pectoral-fin base with a dark spot; caudal peduncle or caudal-fin base without a dark spot; scales without black edges on pockets; caudal fin is not crossed by dark vertical bars; colour of head and body yellow with a peppering of small brown melanophores in life (Ref. 118500)
