Etymology: Cobitis: Greek, kobitis, -idos = a kind of sardine; also related with the voice Greek, kobios, Latin gobius = gudgeon (Ref. 45335); herzegoviniensis: Named for the province where Mostarsko blato, its type locality, is located; an adjective.

Espinas dorsales (total) : 2 - 3; Radios blandos dorsales (total) : 6; Espinas anales: 2 - 3; Radios blandos anales: 6. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: one Canestrini scale on the pectoral fins of males, triangular in shape and with roundish outer border; branched fin rays of anal-fin usually 5 1/2, dorsal-fin 6 1/2, caudal fin 14; caudal fin base with no characteristic spots, but pale deeper pigmentation layer, irregular in shape, sometimes defined; scales on the body very small and visible only under magnification (Ref. 123403).
