Etymology: Characidium: Diminutive of Charax, -akos = a fish without identification (Ref. 45335); onca: Name from Portuguese 'onca', referring to the jaguar Panthera onca (Linnaeus), alluding to the black spots in a bright gold-yellow body; noun in apposition (Ref. 123789).

背鰭 (合計) : 8 - 10; 臀鰭: 6; 脊つい: 35 - 36. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following characters: presence of small dots on the side of the body, arranged in two or three distinct longitudinal lines; short pectoral fin, not reaching the vertical that passes through the origin of the dorsal fin; absence of adipose fin and bars; scaled isthmus; absence of blotches on dorsum; presence of longitudinal gold stripe; and mouth small, terminal. Colouration: yellow to brownish with dorsum darker and whitish belly, with gold tint on opercle, eye and parts of the head (123789).
This species has restricted geographic distribution, currently known only from córrego Taquara and its tributaries. Maximum length based on type specimen, to be replaced with a better reference (Ref. 123789).
