Etymology: Gymnotus: Greek, gymnos = naked (Ref. 45335); refugio: 'refugio' (Portuguese), i.e., meaning sanctuary, in reference to the species distribution, found abundant only in two conservation areas of Rio Grande do Sul (Ref. 128476).
