Etymology: Paratanakia: Name from Greek 'Para' from word 'parilis' meaning beside, near or by, and the genus name Tanakia, referring to the similarity to species of Tanakia 'himantegós'; noun in apposition; julongjiangensis: Named after its type locality of 'Julongjiang river basin' in Fujian Province, China.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: D 3,9; A 3,11; pectoral fin rays modally 1,12; lateral-line scales modally 34. Colouration: dorsal fin gray with a broad shiny pinkish stripe, and with a very thin gray margin in male (Ref. 133055).
