This species is distinguished by the following characters: lateral line, complete, 32-35 scale rows along the lateral line, with tubules continuous; a pair of conspicuous and well-developed posterior barbels, extending to the middle of the orbit; few striae on its scales; circumpendicular scales 12-16 (Ref. 133143).

Although no specific information exist on the habitat and ecology of this species, the environments of the uMgeni and uMkomazi River systems have similar biogeographical characteristics to those of the Vaal and Orange River systems, where these environments have moderate to high flow rates, clean and well-oxygenated waters, and a variety of substrate types, ranging from gravel and pebbles to larger rocks and aquatic vegetation (Ref. 133143).
