Etymology: Xenotilapia: Greek, xenos = strange + Bechuana, African native thiape = fish (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: There is no explicit etymology in Poll’s original, but the text indicates that this is a toponym referring to Burton Bay, Lake Tanganyika, where the species is endemic. The bay is named after Sir Richard Francis Burton (q.v.). (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Africa: endemic to Lake Tanganyika and only known from the type locality: Burton Bay in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Ref. 46829, 53528, 93927).

Found on sandy or muddy bottoms and feeds on insect larvae and crustaceans (Ref. 46829). Remnants of ostracods and shells have been found as well (Ref. 93927). Caught at a depth of 40 m (Ref. 93927), but average depth is about 10 m (Ref. 53528). Forms schools (Ref. 6770).
