Raios dorsais (total) : 10 - 13; Espinhos anais: 2; Raios anais : 8 - 11; Vértebras: 33. Distinguished from Percarina maeotica by its unique character of having scaleless cheek. Differs further by the combination of the following characters: body and fin membranes almost transparent; back milky white without dark spots; 8-9 greyish round or irregularly-shaped blotches along base of dorsal fins (Ref. 59043).
Occurs in groups in fresh and brackish waters with salinities up to 7 ppt, abundant at depths around 5 m over black mud. Feeds predominantly on benthic invertebrates. Spawns in coastal waters close to river mouths, over mud bottom. Spawning occurs in May-June. More or less abundant in lower reaches of rivers and coastal lagoons but increased salinity resulting from reduced flow in all large rivers, which are now dammed, may pose threat to its population (Ref. 59043).
