Eponymy: Lieutenant Herman (forename not given) collected the type in the Cape Verde Islands, either on the way to, or back from, the Congo. We have been unable to find out anything further. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Issue
This species is synonym of Chrysiptera unimaculata (Cuvier, 1830) in Eschmeyer (CofF ver. Mar. 2011: Ref. 86697) following Allen (1991: Ref. 7247:243). But Allen indicated that synonymy (in page 243) was an error, and the species is valid (in page 252) (pers. comm., 11/1997).
