Etymology: Notropis: A misnomer given by Rafinesque to shriveled specimens, with the meaning of "back keel"; from Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335);  buccula: Notropis meaning ridged or keeled back, and buccula, little mouth (in reference to its size compared to close relative N. bairdi) (Ref. 79012).

Inhabits sandy, turbid channels of small to large rivers (Ref. 5723). Feeds on insects, primarily dipterans, terrestrial insects, detritus, and plant material (Ref. 79012).
