Etymology: Notropis: A misnomer given by Rafinesque to shriveled specimens, with the meaning of "back keel"; from Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335); buccula: Notropis meaning ridged or keeled back, and buccula, little mouth (in reference to its size compared to close relative N. bairdi) (Ref. 79012).
