Etymology: avii: Named for Lawrence ‘‘Avi’’ Greenberg (21 July 1982-26 November 2011). The diagnostic lateral cephalic stripe of this species, reminiscent of a smile, is a symbol of Avi’s gentle disposition and goodhearted nature. He is an inspiration to and missed friend of the first author and many others. Latinized as a noun in the genitive singular..

Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal) : 10. Homalopteroides avii can be diagnosed from all congeners by having a wider gape of 28.5-33.3% HL. It further differs by having the following characters: a lateral cephalic stripe; a deeper caudal peduncle; 20-22 circumpeduncular scales; 9 pelvic-fin rays; a total pectoral-fin ray modal count of 15; 43-45 lateral-line scales (Ref. 96077).
